We still use open channels to carry water for irrigation and drainage, but they have some disadvantages as well.
And yet, roughly half of all drinking water and irrigation water used for crops comes from underneath the surface of the earth.
Being one with nature is nice, but it's not the path to irrigation systems, or gunpowder, or cities.
This can assist with navigation of the channel by boats, create a drop for generating hydropower, and make water available at intakes for water supply and irrigation.
