Luckily I have an acrylic flume in my garage, and I can try to demonstrate how this works.

I filled up an acrylic box with layers of sand to make this clearer.

I have here an acrylic box partly full of sand, a setup you’re probably quite familiar with if you follow my channel.

I’ve added a vertical wall of acrylic below the upstream face of my dam, and we’ll see how it affects the flow.

And what do you know, I’ve got an acrylic box in my garage full of sand to show these concepts in real life.

I tried this first in the same acrylic box, but the piping hot jelly busted a seam and came pouring out into my bathtub, creating a huge mess.
