And to me, the arc of US history has been, and Lincoln talked about this too, it's an expansion of freedoms and liberties.

I'm actually talking about something more fundamental, which is that the founders understood that any system of government that's carefully balancing our liberties and governance, if left still for too long, sort of becomes trapped.
