When doors start slamming and the sound of marching fills the rooms, it might be literal ghosts — but it might be historical ones, too.

If you close it quickly, you’ve essentially slammed those trains into a brick wall.

Slamming a valve shut converts all that kinetic energy nearly instantly creating a huge spike in pressure that can lead to stress and damage in pipe systems and connected equipment.

But, as it picks up speed, the flowing water eventually forces the waste valve to slam shut.

However, in large pipelines that can contain enormous volumes of fluid, reversing a pump can be the equivalent of slamming a freight train into a brick wall.
