The first is that the regime of the Shah was pretty repressive.
Without a strict exercise regime, it's possible their bones and muscles would be smaller in their lower body, yet bigger and stronger in their upper body.
All of these factors made it possible for protesters to see some weaknesses in the regime and to take to the streets in the hope of bringing it down.
