The depth of the flow downstream of a dam is called the tailwater, and it controls the location of the hydraulic jump.

And then they would just float back downstream, and they'll wake up somewhere and not understand why they got there!

And, any rescuers who approach a submerged jump from downstream run the risk of being drawing into the hydraulic themselves.

So why would the pressure decrease on the downstream side?

In this case, often two cofferdams are necessary to block off the river on the upstream and downstream ends.

And that avoids a reflective wave of the water that's coming in and being stopped, being pushed back downstream.

Those roles depend on which parts of the electrical grid are being connected together and the types, number, and reliability requirements of the eventual customers downstream.

If you watched my previous video on the basics of open channel hydraulics, you’ll remember that for subcritical flow, that is slow, tranquil flow seen in most rivers, the depth is controlled by downstream conditions.
